Nomad Player Bug list

(This page updated 27th October 2005)

This is a list of "bugs" with the Nomad hard disk based players.

Note that these bugs have mostly been gleaned from the Creative newsgroup and this doesn't represent a definitive fully tested list. It is intended as a heads up for users to judge whether they want to upgrade firmware/drivers.

Note also that some of these bugs are not encountered by all users for some reason. I for example have no issues with 1.32.02 on the NJB3.

If you have any updated information or would like to add a bug then e-mail me.

PlayCentre Cannot set internal clock with PlayCentre U/K N/A Newsgroup This appears to be a problem with the version of PlayCentre bundled with the Zen (3.02.58). If you install an earlier version (3.02.52) you can set it. Alternatively you can download MediaSource which works correctly Closed

When trying to install drivers or updated drivers for the NJB3 and Zen you get problems that the Nomad is an "unknown device" or errors such as "Error while setting up the driver" and "failure to start" (this is a bug that has been noticed over the last few months, but this is the first time it has been logged) June 2003 N/A Newsgroup When installing drivers point the system to the path C:\Program Files\Creative\Jukebox 3 Drivers. This may help. If this doesn't help then go into Device Manager and point the Nomad device to the same driver directory as a driver upgrade.

Also, try deleting the C:\JBDriver directory after any driver uninstall before installing new drivers

After charging and disconnecting the player will not power up without first being reset (this is actually a really old bug, but have just got round to adding it) May 2003 All Newsgroup Switch the Nomad on *before* disconnecting from the power supply.

It seems to occur less frequently with the newer firmware

The PDE detector detects the Nomad is connected and it appears in Device Manager, but PlayCentre and Notmad will not connect to the player Mar 2003 N/A European Web Board, Nomadness forums This seems to be caused by the 1.20.04a drivers, therefore try dowgrading the drivers or using newer drives Open
Cannot change startup screen, an error is given saying that the bitmap is not correct. This is caused by the new 1.20.04b+ drivers Mar 2003 N/A Newsgroup Downgrade the drivers.

When shutting down whilst playing if the unit is left for more than 30 minutes (i.e. idle timeout ) when restarted the unit will continue playing a different song. Only seems to happen with shuffle play mode U/K 1.30.08+ Newsgroup None Open
Firewire transfer results in disconnect errors on certain systems U/K 1.32.02 Newsgroup It's possible that the 1.20.04 drivers help or solve this, but the original bug is not all that clear.

Another possibility is that this is caused by motherboards with NVIDIA nForce chipsets with onboard firewire and audio which share an IRQ. Disabling the audio through the BIOS might clarify if this is the case. Another workaround is to get a separate firewire card. MSI motherboards also seem to be susceptible to these issues.

Open
When playing newly downloaded tracks the position in the track seems to jump at random, and/or the track just appears generally mixed up U/K Unknown Newsgroup 1.20.04 drivers have solved this Closed
While playing tracks, player occasionally emits a low buzz while reloading its disk buffer. Every few times this buzz occurs, the player locks up and has to be physically reset
U/K 1.30.08+ Newsgroup None Open
Sample discontinuities potentially causing an audible "pop" when recording .WAV files via analog and optical. Samples 1536-1546 are not recorded correctly. They appear to be inverted. There is also another error at sample 2048 that appears to be some unknown number of dropped samples.
U/K All Newsgroup None Open
Although it has been stated that the NJB3 will only perform optical recording of .WAV type files at 44.1kHz sample rate, it WILL do 32 and 48 as well under some circumstances. The NJB3 expects the optical bitstream to be in "Consumer SPDIF" or "Consumer IEC-958" form. It appears that the NJB3 file "header" info regarding Sample Rate is extracted from bits 0-3 of Channel Status Block Byte 03 and not extrapolated from the rate of the incoming bit stream. It also appears to ignore other items in the Channel Status Block like Pro/Consumer, Generation Status, etc.
U/K All Newsgroup None Open
After applying firmware update, the NJB3 boots as far as the EAX screen and will not continue further. It is not possible to access the maintenance menu. This is only affecting some users
U/K 1.30.08+ Newsgroup None. Some users have returned their NJB3 to Creative for repair, others are waiting to see if a new firmware will fix the issue. Currently under test with Creative. Open
If the NJB3 is left connected to the mains charger, the mains socket is switched off and the NJB3 shutdown, then the NJB3 appears not to shutdown fully and continues to drain the battery
U/K Unknown Newsgroup None, other than not switching off mains socket or disconnecting charger. Open
